Is your writing suffering because you're pulled in a thousand directions?

If you could only have…

…a stress-free writing space away from your normal routine

…focused time to concentrate on a writing goal

…no distractions, demands, or worries (that goes for work and family)

…a chance to focus on writing in a community of like-minded women

…connection and support from a writing mentor who understands what it’s like to juggle all the things (writing, family, teaching, service…breathing?)

Imagine…

five days of prioritizing your writing (and yourself).

No other humans to take care of.

No cooking, no cleaning, no committee meetings.

Nobody sticking their fingers under the door while you’re in the bathroom (this is rule #1).

Just you connecting with your writing and with other amazing academic women who get that the struggle to publish and keep your life in balance is real.

You can also write on the beach. ????

A true “retreat” from the everyday (often chaotic) rhythm of life.

Hi, I’m Cathy Mazak, and it’s my passion to mentor brilliant academic women to publish more. As a mom of three with 15+ years in academia, I know what it means to need a break. It’s ironic that one of the main parts of our work as academics–to think hard about complex ideas–is so elusive. I often find myself saying to my kids, “Can you just be quiet for a second to let mommy have a thought?”

But it’s not just our kids who impede our deep thinking–it’s the very nature of academia itself. Committee meetings, teaching, office hours…how can we cultivate the focus to get writing done? Enter the writing retreat.

I really believe in taking time out for yourself and your writing, and I can’t wait to welcome you to Puerto Rico to share with you what I’ve learned over the years to have a happy, fulfilling academic career. And writing is a big part of that. I can show you how to write more while cultivating–dare I say it?–joy in your work, and passion for your field, and the excitement created by all the neurons firing over why you got into this gig anyway. Leave refreshed and recharged, ready to make academia into a better place for everybody to thrive.

The writing retreat for academic women includes:

Food & Drinks

Healthy, real food prepared according to your dietary needs, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. All beverages including, water, locally grown coffee, and freshly squeezed juices. All food and drinks will be as locally sourced as possible (we hope to have eggs from our own chickens by then!).

Group Coaching

Daily group coaching sessions. With an upper limit of seven amazing academic women for this retreat, we’ll have plenty of time to dig deep into your writing joys, fears, successes and limitations. We’ll talk about everything from overcoming writing anxiety to dealing with reviewer #2.

Writing time

Of course our retreat will include lots of writing time. Continuous and controlled spans of time that you can depend on. Focused time to work without distractions. The kind of writing time that makes you feel energized and inspired.

Beach sneak away

Now you wouldn’t come all the way to a Caribbean island and not go to the beach, would you? As a reward for all of your hard work, and as a rest for your body and mind, you can walk to the  local beach where you can dig your toes in the sand or float your cares away. (And not have to worry about any small humans eating sand.)

One-on-one coaching

And I wouldn’t want you to come all the way to Puerto Rico and not get some one-on-one time with you! Together we’ll tackle your biggest writing obstacles and make a realistic, actionable writing plan that you can sustain once you’re home. Critique, feedback, whatever you need, I got you.

Bonus!

You will get a FREE thirty minute strategy call with me to plan out your individual goals for the retreat. We’ll talk through your expectations, make a pre-retreat work plan, and be sure that you take FULL advantage of your writing time!

Want to show your department chair more info about the retreat? Download the brochure here: Academic Women’s Writing Retreat.

Here’s what the retreat will NOT include:

The retreat does not include airfare. Rincon is in western Puerto Rico. SJU International Airport is about 2.5 hours away. BQN International Airport (in Aguadilla) is about 45 minutes from Rincon.

The retreat does not include transportation to and from the airport in Puerto Rico (though I will happily help you arrange this transportation!)

The retreat does not include pressure to participate in everything. You’re in charge of your time, so if you’re on a writing roll, just go with it!

Refund policy:

Please understand that I would love to be super flexible, but with such few spots I am asking for a serious commitment (so please consider this carefully!). I cannot honor cancellations after September 1, 2018. So again, please, please consider carefully.

Travel Delay Policy:

I can not give refunds or discounts for late arrival, early departure, flight cancellations, travel delays or illness. I wish I could compensate people for unforeseen circumstances, but unfortunately I can’t afford to cover the extra costs incurred by these predicaments.

Travel Days:

Arrival time is by noon on Monday, January 7. Departure time is by noon on Friday, January 11. If you would like to arrive early or extend your stay, I can advise you on places in Puerto Rico to visit.
